How much RAM should you allocate to Minecraft?

Minecraft Java lets you set how much memory it can use. Set it too low and big modpacks stutter or crash. Set it far too high and you can make things worse, because the game pauses longer when it cleans up memory.

Bottom line

Vanilla or light shaders run fine on 4 GB allocated. Medium modpacks want 6 GB. Heavy modpacks with 150-plus mods want 8 to 10 GB. Going past what a pack needs does not add FPS and can add pauses, so match the pack, do not max it out.

What the allocation actually does

The allocation is a ceiling, not a reservation. It caps how much memory Minecraft may use. Your PC still needs headroom left over for Windows, your browser, and the launcher.

  • Allocating more than your PC has free causes heavy stutter or crashes.
  • On an 8 GB PC, do not hand all 8 GB to the game, leave room for the system.
  • 16 GB of system RAM is comfortable for modded Minecraft with shaders.

Sensible amounts by play style

Match the allocation to what you actually run. These are practical starting points, not official numbers.

  • Vanilla and light shaders: 4 GB.
  • Medium modpacks or heavier shaders: 6 GB.
  • Large modpacks, 150-plus mods: 8 to 10 GB.
  • If it still stutters after that, the limit is usually CPU or GPU, not RAM.

Why more is not always better

Java pauses briefly to clean unused memory. A very large allocation can make those pauses longer and more noticeable, which feels like a stutter.

  • Past a pack's needs, extra RAM sits idle and does not raise FPS.
  • Oversized allocations can lengthen garbage-collection pauses.
  • Give the pack what it asks for, then stop.

How to set it

The official launcher and popular third-party launchers both expose a memory slider or a JVM argument.

  • In the launcher, edit the installation or profile and set the memory slider.
  • Advanced users set -Xmx, for example -Xmx8G for 8 GB.
  • Change one thing at a time and test, so you can tell what helped.
